IT'S ALL ABOUT THROWING UNDERHAND AND OVERHAND. FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS WE WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN GAMES THAT INVOLVE THROWING WITH GOOD FORM. ASK YOUR CHILD THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN OVERHAND THROW AND AN UNDERHAND THROW. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE IS - WHEN YOU THROW UNDERHAND, YOU FACE THE TARGET AND WHEN YOU THROW OVERHAND, YOU TURN SIDEWAYS.

WAKE COUNTY STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TEST TWICE A YEAR, ONCE IN THE FALL AND ONCE IN THE SPRING.
THE REQUIRED TESTS ARE: MILE RUN, PUSH-UPS, CURL-UPS OR SIT-UPS, SIT AND REACH FLEXIBILITY.
ONCE STUDENTS HAVE THEIR FALL TEST RESULTS, WE WILL WORK WITH THEM ON CREATING SPRING FITNESS TEST GOALS. WE WANT STUDENTS TO WORK ON THEIR INDIVIDUAL FITNESS AND SEE THAT PRACTICE DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
THERE IS A COUNTY WIDE GOAL TO IMPROVE THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF CURL UPS OUR STUDENTS CAN DO IN ONE MINUTE. WE WILL WORK HARD TO HAVE ALL STUDENTS REACH THE STANDARD. SEE BELOW FOR THE CURL UP IN ONE MINUTE STANDARDS. WE HAVE FITNESS STATIONS PREPARED TO GIVE THEM PRACTICE, AND WE BEGIN EACH CLASS WITH PLANKS. STUDENTS WILL STRIVE TO DO A GREAT PLANK FOR AT LEAST ONE MINUTE BY THE END OF THE YEAR. ALL STUDENTS WHO CAN ALREADY DO A ONE MINUTE PLANK ARE CHALLENGING THEMSELVES WITH THEIR OWN GOAL. THEY ARE ENCOURAGED TO PLANK AT HOME TOO. PLANKS WILL HELP STUDENTS TO DEVELOP A STRONG CORE WHICH WILL IMPROVE POSTURE, BALANCE, AND COORDINATION.
STUDENTS WILL ALSO LEARNING ABOUT THE 5 COMPONENTS OF HEALTH-RELATED FITNESS: MUSCULAR STRENGTH, MUSCULAR ENDURANCE, CARDIOVASCULAR ENDURANCE, FLEXIBILITY AND BODY COMPOSITION. WE WILL ALSO BE REVIEWING THE PHYSIOLOGICAL INDICATORS OF MODERATE TO VIGOROUS ACTIVITY. THIS INFORMATION ALLOWS STUDENTS TO ADJUST THEIR LEVEL OF ACTIVITY ACCORDINGLY.

We are looking forward to a great start this year! All grades will start off learning our rules, procedures and expectations in Physical Education class and on the playground. We will focus on listening and learning to follow directions through games such as: Strawberry, Chocolate and Vanilla, "Coach G says" and Freeze Tag.
